Wish You Were Here: The Silver Birch Ceremony 7

May 16, 2014

That’s me talking to 2000 screaming fans of books and reading! An author’s dream!

Hello from Toronto again, but this time from a fantastical place where authors are rocks stars and kids love reading with a frenzied passion and line ups for autographs from said author/rock stars snake around buildings. Yesterday was the Forest of Reading’s final climax: the ceremony for the Silver Birch Award in three categories, with my book, Nobody’s Dog, up for the middle grade (age 8-12) category (so excited for Robin Stevenson, who won for Record Breaker.) It’s been such a thrill to be part of this amazing program, one that celebrates readers and writers and libraries, and treats reading books as the adventure it should be.

Huzzah!

Wish You Were Here: Ria in Toronto 4

Hello from away!

I’ve had the fortune to have lunch with my editor for my two books while we are in Toronto. We went out to a fabulous Italian restaurant, Gusto, for lunch. [Before that I got a tour of the Scholastic headquarters–such a treat! I just love meeting passionate and talented book people!] And right now I need to tell you about the pasta. I know I’ve waxed a bit about pasta before, but this was inspired. Fresh, quite al dente in the best possible way. And covered–not smothered–in a yellow tomato and cream sauce. Basil strewn over the top. Naturally.  Pasta seems so simple, but when it’s done right, you realise how easy it is to mess it up.

Runner up for deliciousness: lemon and blueberry cheesecake from Dufflet, of which I sadly have no photo.

More soon,

Ria

Hi there, Weekend. It’s time for Sweet Little Something – an end of the week morsel that we would love your comments on. It may be a photograph, a link, a poem…some tidbit of inspiration. Leave us a note or create a haiku for a photograph if it takes your fancy. We love hearing from you.

**And happy birthday to DH–may you enjoy the most delicious coffee on this day**

Okay, so don’t freak out but I’ve been to listening to….music.

I’ve been to two concerts this past month. Two. That’s more concerts than I’ve managed to get to in the same number of years. You know how some people say they don’t get out much? Yeah, that’s me. I’ve been living under a (pretty comfortable thankyouverymuch) rock. Parenthood, for sure, is largely to blame but in truth I’ve always lagged behind with new music. At primary school I was asked which radio station I listened to and I was totally flummoxed. Huh? Radio station? What? Um, I’m pretty keen on Dad’s Rumours album and the Best of Dire Straits cassette is getting worn through, does that count?

My younger brother and sister think my music tastes are endearing and hilarious. My sister thinks it is knee-slap worthy that I am now listening to what was considered a student radio, bFm. She’s all “pah ha ha, only about fifteen years late”. Yeah yeah, shush you, Cheeky. But there it is, suddenly and finally, I am listening to something other than Fiona Apple, Fleetwood Mac – never did shake that one – and Ella Fitzgerald on repeat. And – get this – new music is, like, gooooooood. Who knew? (Everyone.)

**Exciting interjection** Ria’s going on the road! For the next few weeks she’ll be in Ontario, Canada, participating in the Forest of Reading–chatting with readers, writers and other bookish people. If you live in Toronto or London, she’d love to meet you at one of the events! While she’s away, she’ll be sending back postcards of her adventures, so check back here to see them!
