Feasting (or Ffffffff…ummmm…I give up…Chocolate) 7

Finally folks, here is the post I promised. There is chocolate. Oh yes. I prepared this post after Ria’s ethereal Fog post and I was on a bit of an F word buzz. F being for Feast. And Fantastic. And February, before she vanishes. And Fffffffwwwwooooooaaarr because you’ve eaten so much you need to unbutton your trousers.

It’s been a very good season for feasting. We’ve had BBQ weather, picnic weather, sandwiches and ice-cream weather. Weather for standing at the open door of your cool-bellied fridge and marveling at all the bounty inside. And for those of you who follow our instagram feed you’ve probably already noticed it’s been The Summer of Chocolate. I’ve done so much afghan biscuit making I’ve been asked for the recipe. Which has meant making (ahem, eating) many, many more batches of biscuits to get it perfect.

So burdensome.

Today, because of all the chocky munching I’ve been doing, I have not one but….wait for it…it gets sequential…TWO great chocolate recipes for you AND a link to another, making it a trifecta of chocolate goodness.

I know, I know, don’t thank me (just send cash).

Beghrir: Breakfast Then and Now 6

It doesn’t take much to get me nostalgic these days, what with being a parent and all, but that’s always been especially true about food. You knew that already, right? Some things haven’t changed in the past few years, like our personal obsessions (me: chocolate and ice cream, DH: coffee and coffee) and our inclination to be food tourists everywhere we go. But some things have–like the frequency of elaborate and intricately planned meals. Case in point: before-kids, we made home-made pasta fairly often, more often than anyone else we knew, because we could and we loved it. Apres kids, I think we’ve made it twice. And the second time I tried to wriggle out of it.

Now the nostalgia is thinking back to the pre-child days when we worked hard but also played hard and didn’t have the responsibilities of house and small people and careers. When we traveled freely and wantonly and slept in without guilt. Breakfast was always a big deal for us. Every weekend morning was a chance to outdo the one before and we’d flip through cookbooks and plan the mornings in a way that seems so indulgent now. Thank goodness we got to do it, if for no other reason than the memories I have now.

Sweet Little (Valentines) Something 2

Valentines. Yes, yes, it’s cheesy, corny and shmaltzy. But aren’t they all food-related adjectives?? We had no choice but to get into the spirit. I LOVE StoryCorps. I remember seeing a StoryCorps booth in Chicago and being completely intrigued. What a project. Here is an edited recording of Danny and Annie discussing their beautiful relationship (in really lovable Brooklyn accents).
